Put Ecuador On Your Retirement Destination List
by Ritchie Mehta (22 January 2010)
Results from the latest Global Retirement Index survey suggest that Ecuador is the worlds top retirement haven in 2009. Though being 17 hours flight from the UK, many Brit's might be looking for somewhere closer to home...
According to the latest Global Retirement Index survey conducted by International Living, Cuenca in Ecuador was deemed the world top retirement haven in 2009. They suggest that the colony boasts of magnificent architecture, beautiful views and weather that just cannot be beaten. In addition, it is surprising very affordable, especially for us Brits, as according to the survey a large apartment will set you back around $40,000. When translated into Pounds that works out to around £25,000. Certainly, much better value than we could ever imagine living in the British Isles.
But what amenities has Cuenca got? Well, the survey suggests it has a buzzing atmosphere with a host of shops, restaurants and cafes. And if they do not tickle your fancy than get in line for the orchestra (the line is only figuratively speaking as Cuenca is renowned for having no queues). Even healthcare doesn’t pose much of an obstacle, with adequate care for basic ailments. The next question is, what are you waiting for?
Well, perhaps the downside for us Bits is that it is an awfully long way from home. The average flight time from the UK to Ecuador is around 17 hours, which is a far cry from stepping over the channel into Europe. In which case the Global Retirement Index ranks Calitri in Italy among its top 5 destinations. With a house setting you back less than £40,000 and with it being only an hours drive away from the Amalfi Coast, who can ask for more.
